HOW CAN I TAKE THE EXAM
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM READING SUBTEST
The OET Reading sub-test consists of three parts, and each part contains a different type of text:
Part A: Expeditious Reading (skimming and scanning)
- In this part, you are given a short text, such as a notice, email, or short article.
- Your task is to quickly read the text and answer a set of multiple-choice questions that follow.
- The questions usually test your ability to identify specific information, main ideas, or the purpose of the text.
Part B: Skimming (reading for gist)
- In Part B, you will encounter a longer text, such as a newspaper or magazine article.
- Your goal is to skim the text and answer a set of multiple-choice questions.
- The questions typically focus on the main idea, supporting details, or the writer’s opinion.
Part C: Scanning (reading for detail)
- Part C involves a detailed text, such as a patient case study or a healthcare guideline.
- You need to carefully read the text and answer a set of multiple-choice questions.
- The questions require you to extract specific information, infer meaning, or make connections within the text.
Tips for OET Reading:
Familiarize yourself with different text types: Practice reading a variety of texts commonly found in healthcare settings, such as medical journals, patient information leaflets, and research articles.
Develop skimming and scanning techniques: Learn to quickly identify the main idea, topic sentences, and keywords while skimming or scanning the text. This skill will help you save time during the test.
Understand question types: Pay attention to the instructions and question types. Practice different question formats, such as multiple-choice, matching information, and completing summaries.
Pay attention to time management: Each part of the OET Reading sub-test has a specific time limit. Allocate your time wisely so that you have sufficient time to read and answer all the questions in each part.
